Frequently asked questions

Is a homestay profitable?

It is when real occupancy sits well above break-even. Many homestays in tourist towns average 50–70% over a year, but high rent or heavy reliance on OTAs can push break-even very high. The article under Read more goes through each cost.

What is break-even occupancy?

The occupancy at which revenue, after commission and per-night costs, just covers the fixed costs. Below it you lose money.

How long does a homestay take to pay back?

The initial investment divided by the monthly profit. On a leased house, compare it with the lease term: paying back after the lease ends means no real profit.

Is tax taken off?

No. Profit here is before tax. Use the homestay tax calculator to estimate VAT and PIT on the year’s revenue.
